If you're preparing to work and build a new life in the United States, one of the steps you must complete as a Filipino U.S. immigrant visa holder is securing and attending the Pre-Departure Orientation Seminar (PDOS) conducted by the Commission on Filipinos Overseas (CFO). This mandatory seminar is a crucial part of the migration process and is designed to prepare you for the realities of living and working in a new country. It equips participants with both practical knowledge and the emotional readiness needed to adapt to life abroad. Ultimately, PDOS aims to help Filipino workers migrate in a safe, legal, and well-informed manner.

During the seminar, you’ll gain essential information about working and settling in a foreign country—specifically, insights into American work culture, employment laws, workers’ rights, and responsibilities. The orientation also covers vital safety information to help you avoid illegal recruitment, labor exploitation, scams, and human trafficking. Participants are introduced to trusted organizations they can turn to for assistance while abroad. Beyond the legal and practical aspects, PDOS also addresses the emotional and social challenges of working overseas, including managing long-distance family relationships and adjusting to a new cultural environment.

Now that you understand the value of PDOS, make sure to prepare these required documents to ensure a smooth seminar experience and a hassle-free migration process:

Original Valid Passport. Your original valid passport is needed during PDOS to verify your identity and confirm your eligibility to travel and work in the U.S. It also serves as the primary document for matching your visa details with official records and is required for the issuance of your CFO certificate or sticker, a necessary document for departure.

Original Valid Immigrant Visa and Photocopy of Visa or Immigration Documents. Bring your original immigrant visa along with a photocopy to validate your legal status as an immigrant worker. These documents allow the CFO to record your information accurately and confirm your eligibility to live and work in the U.S. Having both originals and copies helps avoid processing delays.

Completed CFO Online Registration Form. Your completed online registration form confirms your enrollment in the PDOS. It streamlines your check-in process and ensures your data is properly recorded for the issuance of your CFO clearance—an essential requirement for departing the country.

Government-Issued ID with Photo. A valid government-issued photo ID helps further verify your identity and supports a secure registration process. It acts as an additional safeguard to ensure that only legitimate visa holders attend the seminar.
