U.K. Staff Nurse Employer Interviews: November 18 & Every 2 Weeks After
Just last week, the POEA has confirmed that the deployment cap on healthcare workers who wish to work abroad has already been reached. Before the start of the year, the institution has initially imposed a 5,000 deployment cap on HCWs: Eventually, they increased it to 6,500 in the middle of the year. It’s no surprise, though, that this was reached even before 2021 ends: The deployment of nurses alone was already averaging 15,000 a year prior to the pandemic.
It’s important to note, though, that certain exemptions were at least granted to the deployment cap. First, Balik Manggawa, or returning overseas Filipino workers, won’t be included in the 6,500 count. Second, HCWs who applied through a government-to-government arrangement, won’t be counted under the cap as well. And third, HCWs who are bound for the United Kingdom, won’t have to worry about this too since the U.K. government has recently inked a separate agreement with the POEA on the recruitment of HCWS.
The United Kingdom is indeed today’s most attractive overseas work destination among Filipino nurses. It offers competitive compensation and benefits; a progressive work environment that encourages continuous education and training; advanced standards and facilities; and an open and multicultural environment. It’s also one of the countries in the world with a remarkable nursing shortage, that Prime Ministrer Boris Johnson has recently confirmed its need for at least 50,000 nurses from this year until 2024. Combining all of these with its exemption from the deployment cap, the United Kingdom has unsurprisingly become many Filipino nurses’ preferred place to work at.
