Come and Work With The First Filipino Executive Chief Nurse Appointed in the NHS
Oliver Soriano, a Filipino nurse, has achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first Filipino Executive Chief Nurse and Quality Officer appointed in the NHS, specifically in the Lancashire and South Cumbria NHS Foundation Trust (LSCFT). In addition to his groundbreaking role, he also serves as the President of the Philippine Nurses Association UK (PNAUK), a leading professional nursing association for Philippine nurses in the United Kingdom. It operates as a nonprofit professional institution and holds official registration as a charitable organization with the UK Charities Commission.
According to LSCFT, Soriano has illustrated skillfulness, knowledge, and great ambition that will surely be a huge asset to the executive team and the Trust board. Furthermore, he has remarkable professional expertise that includes work across acute and mental health Trusts and a bridge to diverse healthcare settings, including emergency departments and specialist divisions. He has also served in various roles such as Associate Chief Nursing Officer, Head of Nursing – Psychological Medicine and Older Adults, General Manager – Specialist Services, Matron – Older Adults, Advanced Clinical Practitioner, and Mental Health Liaison Nurse.
Oliver Soriano graduated from United Doctor Medical Centre in 1992. He also volunteered at the Philippine National Red Cross NHQ and later became one of the Safety Instructors, acquiring knowledge and experience in facilitating training in Basic Life Support, Standard, and Advanced First Aid across the Philippines. In 1994, he became a clinical instructor at Centro Escolar University, where he taught Foundation of Nursing. Later, he transferred to Far Eastern University's Institute of Nursing, with his main focus on teaching about mental health.
Upon Soriano's arrival in the U.K. in 1998, he took a conversion course for mental health registration at King's College London - Nightingale Institute of Nursing and Midwifery and completed the course in the year 2002. This vital move helped him gain many opportunities to focus on working in a mental health setting. Soriano is a dual-registered nurse in the U.K. — a Registered General Nurse (RGN) and a Registered Mental Nurse (RMN) who can work across different mental health clinical settings within the NHS. Soriano has been working in the U.K. for over two decades now, and he is one of the first internationally recruited nurses from the Philippines who proved to the NHS that they made the right decision in hiring Filipino nurses to work in the U.K.
