Many of our kababayans dream of pursuing a life-changing career; hence, they believe working abroad brings them closer to this goal. This fact is totally undeniable, as the aspiration to provide a good quality of life to their family and a rewarding career remains a top priority among Filipinos.

Easier said than done, there are many factors to consider when applying for a job in a foreign land: licenses, documents, and several processes are just some of them. You may also hear advice from colleagues, friends, and families on what to consider when starting your application. Some may also make you think twice about whether working overseas is really for you. As it may be overwhelming and complicated, we've listed some of the myths that possibly deter nurses from pursuing an overseas opportunity. Continue reading as we debunk each of them.

1. "I Need to Be a Top Graduate"

As rewarding as it may sound, being a top graduate isn't really a prerequisite for you to land a job abroad. Each employer has a specific set of qualifications: exams, experiences, and licenses, but that does not limit someone who is not the cream of the crop. Some employers base their intuition on the nurse's passion and outlook in life, even more than academic achievements. Lastly, foreign employers who require a licensure exam for their country won't look for the score of your PNLE but instead, look for the result of their country's licensure exam.

2. "It's Too Expensive to Apply"

Let's face it: application costs can deter many potential candidates. But let's be honest: if we don't maximize our investments, anything can end up being costly. Initially, you may need to dip into your savings, much like when you enroll in school, buy a new gadget, or pay for a service. However, these expenses represent an investment in your future. If you choose an employer who covers application costs and offers support with your requirements, you'll definitely save a significant amount of your hard-earned money. Fortunately, Abba has clients who generously reimburse application fees—sometimes even upfront!

3. "Only Young Nurses Are Accepted"

Abba, which has been in the recruitment industry for more than two decades, nominates this as one of the most frequently asked questions: "Is there an age limit?" As a matter of fact, we can't blame applicants for having this inquiry over and over again, as most local employers are setting age requirements. We are glad to tell you that the overseas setting is different. Most foreign employers value experience, maturity, and adaptability over age. No matter your age, if you believe you can handle the demands of the position, you're in the running!

4. "My Bedside Experience Isn't Enough"

If you've worked in a hospital setting, you already possess essential qualities that make you a strong candidate for a career abroad. In fact, some employers give some consideration based on the interviews. Even though bedside experience is a crucial requirement for landing a job overseas, there are other factors that employers look into aside from the nurse's bedside experience that will help you clinch that: "You're hired!"

These are just 4 of the most talked about myths from our applicants, and there are definitely more jaded areas that you would want to clear out.
